I bought a stripped lower last night

I picked up a stripped lower last night. I bought a JD Machine forged unit and now I just have to wait the standard CA 10 days to pick it up. I'm really looking forward to building this rifle. I'm getting married this summer, so it will be a LONG build as I'm not going to have any extra money for a while. Here's how I'm currently planning on building it:

Timney Trigger:

AR-15 Competition

ERGO Tactical Deluxe Grip:

Welcome to ERGO Grip Products

Undecided on upper 1/2, but I'm thinking a 20" bull barrel and leaning in this direction:

Rock River Arms: Predator Pursuit Upper Half

I'm anxious to start getting this thing assembled, but have to be patient. It will probably take at least a year to get it together.

Oh, and I picked up a bullet button for it while I was there too.

6.8 SPC coming along

After much thought about whether to build a 6.8 SPC or a 6.5 Grendel, I decided that the 6.8 was good enough at the ranges that I expected to use it. (I have a .264 Win Mag built on a Manchester marked Mauser Mark X action ... and it shoots well enough for longer ranges).

I found a lightly used 18" fluted WOA 1:11 SPC II bbl with a mid-length gas system and matched WOA bolt. . Its muzzle threaded 5/8x24. Resulting top end has a full length YHM light rail forearm, a YHM Brake/FH built on an RRA flat top upper. FA Bolt carrier is from BCM. Rifle is set up with a 3-9x Pentax scope with the Ballistic Plex reticle.

Lower is one of two shared with other uppers. One is a BRO with SOPMOD and Bill Springfield 3# trigger. The other is a Stag with ACR and an RRA National Match trigger.

Here it is on the Stag lower:

(It usually does not have the vertical grip mounted.)

Have begun working up loads. Playing with 100 gr Accubond and cheaper 110 gr Sierra Prohunters. (Also expect to play with the 95 gr TTSX to be introduced later this year.) Here is one of the 100 yard groups so far. 4 of 5 formed the group in top of the black diamond. 5th is in the right side of the diamond and was a called flier. 4 of 5 group measures 0.364" Need to work on my bench some as it isn't deep enough to provide support for the rear of the rifle. Load is 29.5 gr H322 on SSA small primer cases with WSR primers. Upper was on the BRO lower when this group was shot.

(Group in the center of the diamond is 3 rnds from a .376/.416 Steyr Improved built on an FN Mauser action with home made custom scope mounts for a 1.8-5.5 Zeiss Conquest fitted with Leupold QRW rings. Is unusually good because the load was a 400 gr cast projectile w gas check.)

I think the 6.8 is going to work out fine. WIll have to get some more experience with the ARs to eliminate the flier problem.

Scope

I was thinking of purchasing a AR 15 rifle scope from Leupold. 6 x 18 power. I know that there are a lot of scopes out there but has anyone used this scope. Also what scope do you have on your AR 15?

Competition Shoot

Has anybody shot in a competition shoot. I was thinking of shooting in the Fireman's Olympics. I was told that most people use military rifles with open sites. The distances will be out to 600 yards. They said that the 6oo yard range would be smaller targets set up at closer distances simulating a 600 yard shot. Has anybody done any of this type of shooting. I was told that there would be shooting from different positions: Sitting, Prone, Standing. Rapid fire at sitting and prone. Seems like it will be fun. Looking for some advise if anybody has shot in this type of competition.
thanks Pappy
